Last night, I tagged along with two ladies–lucky guy that I am–to see the opening night of Star Trek. Admittedly, I am a huge fan of the original series. I was turned onto it as a young kid on re-runs, and my first Star Trek movie was “The Wrath of Khan“. (Confession: I can quote every line in “The Wrath of Khan.” Every line.) With all of my Star Trek history, I was looking forward to the release of this movie.
The casting was pretty spot-on. The actors playing Spock and McCoy–Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban–do a pretty good job of channeling the iconic portrayals of some forty years ago. Urban’s McCoy is just like DeForest Kelley’s. Chris Pine makes for a pretty good Kirk, too. The movie had many homages to fans of the original series as well–the sounds used made any fan of the original series smile.
The story conveniently explains the “reboot” of the franchise, and it was a good reboot. The movie has enough to keep original fans engrossed, and it will certainly bring along new fans. I had some minor issues with the tremendous amount of running the characters seemed to do aboard the Enterprise. My only other issue is with J.J. Abrams use of jerky hand cameras at times. Still, though, this could have been my seat.
I highly recommend seeing this movie. As a matter of fact, I want to see it again in order to just take it all in. It was a good way to kick off the summer movie season.

Wasn’t it amazing! I thought the “reboot” was particularly clever. And Nimoy showing up was great–it felt like the old series passing on the torch to the next.

Agreed, though. They did a good job in explaining the reboot. I liked Nimoy being present, as he added gravitas to a movie that I think needed a bit of it.
