- I am somewhat shocked by the following, but my taxes for 2008 are filed and done. Refunds are processing and should be on their way in short order. This is the earliest I have filed taxes since I worked at the University of Maryland. It also shows that I think I need to do a better job at making my money work for me.
- On Friday night, I saw Gran Torino. Go. See. It.
- As the Super Bowl approaches, it is time for me to make my chili. All the ingredients are purchased and ready, so I will probably make it in the middle of the week to get it ready and bring all of the flavors together. I still do not know what exactly I am doing for the game, though. I have an invite to a party, but I am tentative at the moment.
- Surprisingly good article about the slow FiOS pace for Baltimore by Jay Hancock in the Sun. Not much is definitively said as to when Verizon will actually start laying fiber in the city, but an estimate of 2010 is given. While I welcome their competition with Comcast for my viewing and Internet browsing dollars, I want their bandwidth to my house—replacing cable television is secondary to me.
- With my switching of cell phones, I realize that I was not particularly good about updating my offline address book with cell phone numbers. Thus, I am finding I do not have everyone’s current cell phone number. If I had your number and you still want me to have it, email me at jasonjthomas AT gmail DOT com.
- Apparently, people I have not seen nor heard from since I went to middle school have discovered me on Facebook. That’s a both scary and cool at the same time.
- I seriously need to get back to Sunday brunches with friends. I miss those.

I’m jealous of your filing status. Err, rather the status of your taxes being filed. I haven’t even received my forms; neither my W2 from work or my 1099-INT from the bank.
Thanks for the pointer to the Jay Hancock story.
Baltimore City has been “red lined” for FIOS because if they start any deployment in the city an try to cherry pick neighborhoods the city council will scream racism and make them start laying fiber in neighborhoods that would be the last to adopt FIOS and make it unprofitable for Verizon’s short term desires.
Of course opting for FIOS is just trading the bad and evil Comcast for the fast but evil Verzon for your ISP.
For the time being I’ll continue to opt of of the choice between Comcast (aweful) and Verizon (evil and neglectful of the copper infrastructure) for a local Wireless ISP ( Believe Wireless http://www.believewireless.com/)
@Paul: I don’t doubt there is some “red lining” going on, but you would never get Verizon to admit it. Even then, given the makeup of our City Council, Verizon would never quite get the fair shake they need to get the uptake in the city they would desire.
While I appreciate your distaste for both vendors–and share some of those same opinions–I am of the mind that I will gladly take the devil I know. Besides, I really want my bandwidth. I don’t see any wireless provider coming close to what I could get with cable or FiOS. Cable, with DOCSIS 3.0, is really going to be able to compete at a level I desire.
I have to admit that my desire for precious bandwidth to my house trumps my desire to spit on both vendors. That said, the presence of Verizon alone as a competitor to Verizon–since both would be on similar footing given corporate size–would be a welcome relief to rate-payers.
Haven’t you been paying attention? You’re no longer allowed to use the term ‘Super B**l’ without paying a fee to the NFL. The commonly accepted term now is ‘The Big Game’.
Given a choice I wouldn’t sign up for FIOS as it currently is. I want the freedom of a dumb pipe and ISP that will let me do anything reasonable with the pipe.
Oh and I agree Verizon would not get a fair shake from the city council.
Oh and all DOCIS 3.0 is going to do for you on Comcast is to help you hit your 250GB cap all the quicker.
I also agree the more competition for broadband the better it will be for the consumer.
