Drinking the Kool-Aid

I have drank the Kool-Aid and given in to the pressure.  My Dell DJ died a rather unspectacular death yesterday, freezing upon a screen image text “FIRMWARE PROBLEM.”  I knew this day would come, but I had always wanted to avoid it.

After much hemming and hawing, I was deciding between the Zune2 (the 80GB version) and the iPod Classic.  Indeed, after my railing against Apple, I was considering the very bane of my existence as my new music player.  I needed something for this weekend, as I am heading down to see my grandfather, so I called around to see who had a Zune, and I was disappointed that there are really none to be had.

I made a call to the Best Buy downtown, and I looked to see what they had in stock since they are right next to my office.  I was vanquished again in my Zune search, but they had an iPod Classic in stock, 80GB.  I put it on hold, and I stepped out around lunch time to make the purchase.

I like the form factor compared to my old brick, the Dell DJ. I still find iTunes to be an unwieldly beast, and I will need another day to get used to it.

I will miss my trusty DJ, and I will be taking it apart to see what, if anything, is salvageable.  Heck, it might be interesting to experiment with as an external drive.  Nonetheless, that little piece of electronics is worthy of a Viking funeral.

Consider Winamp for your iPod music manager. I’ve been using winamp for managing the iPod library for years (back when it was just a 3rd-party plugin; it now comes bundled with winamp) and I’ve never looked back. I don’t need an additional tool to manage my music library for me, thank you very much.

It’s quite convenient and easy to use. Just drag and drop your MP3 files, no filthy itunes required.

As an aside, there are multiple PHP errors when submitting comments, looks like they’re related to Bad Behavior somehow.

I have a Zune, and I wouldn’t recommend it. Although I prefer the physical layout of the Zune better and the hardware is fine, the Zune media player is weak and its indexing features are positively abominable. The irony is that it used to just be a shalacked version of media player (which is not great, but is okay), but at some point microsoft redid it and dumbed down its functionality. It sucks.

You made a good purchase with the iPod, and yeah winamp is the bees knees if you haven’t used it.

I think you made a good choice. I am far from an Apple fanboy, but the iPod is almost a must if you’re going to use your music player for anything more than a digital walkman. I chose it because I want to be able to connect it to multiple output sources, such as my car, my home stereo, etc. Most of these (especially car stereos) support only the iPod, if anything at all. Enjoy!

mokie: Winamp, huh? I will have to take a look. iTunes seems much too unwieldly and bloated. I had a system that worked, and I just don’t want to give up on that system. iTunes will be there for the moment, then time to monkey around with Winamp.

Jon: A second vote for Winamp. This is getting persuasive.

R.O.B.: That was part of my decision. If you want an accessory for the iPod, they make it. If they don’t already make it.

Dizzle: I will gladly keep my Macness to the iPod only.

If you haven’t tried it give iTunes a chance before using another tool to manage you new iPod. I also look forward to what you end up thinking about your first Apple purchase. :-)

Okay - I’ll be the “girl” in this string of comments. Let me know when you need accessories, okay? I’ll hook you up on cases and headphones.

    We are Apple.

    You will be assimilated.

    Resistance is futile.
