Jury Duty, Again

While I appreciate being called for Jury Duty in our fair city, getting consistently called to serve is becoming a royal pain.  I am completely in support of performing my civic duty, but I completely predict that I will spend the entire day running from courtroom to courtroom, waiting to be excused from duty.

In typical Circuit Court for Baltimore City fashion, they are summoning 999 potential jurors for Monday.  I think when I was called last year, my number was not called.  Of course, it has not even been one year since the arrival of my last summons.  Given that I have not served in the past year, though, I cannot be excused.  Given that my last summons was in July 2007, though, I wonder if they can call me for service twice in the same 12 month period.  I will ask the question tomorrow, but something tells me they already have an answer I will not like.

I will unhappily appear at the court house on Monday morning, awaiting my $15 stipend for spending an entire fruitless day.  Thanks, Frank Conaway and the Circuit Court of Baltimore City for picking my number, as it were!

A lot of people from the neighborhood are being called. I guess they ran out of potential jurors from across town? What a crock of crap.

I did jury duty last April so I’m a little surprised I haven’t gotten a new summons yet but I imagine it will come soon. I was number 38, so I ended up as Madam Forewoman, and that kind of sucked, but still, I get it and get why it’s important… just wish it didn’t become an annual event here in the city.

And I have to give my $15 to my office to get them to pay my full salary for the day. It’s official policy! Grrr.

I was finally summonsed here in NYC after having been able to avoid it all my life. Of course, I ended up on a trial that lasted 10 days. The bright side of that is now I can’t be called for at least 7 years. There are some advantages to living in a city with 8 million other people I suppose.

So did you get on a jury? Or just waste the day at the court house?

Carol: Looks like I wait until next year.

Summer: Yeah, every year waiting for my annual summons sucks.

George: Numbers always help in large cities.

Paul: I sat around all day. I went to one courtroom, had voir dire, then waited. I was then excused.

Jury duty in Baltimore sounds awesome. 15 bucks might get you a sandwich and a place to park for a few hours. Totally worth it.

    Yay, civic duty!

JJT… she was in the 800s… and Jeannine, $15 will get you either a place to park or a sandwich, not both.
