I am now able to join the ranks of those suffering under the pain that is Verizon Repair Services. The other night, while desiring some General Tso’s Chicken from the local Chinese place, I decided to utilize my rarely-used home phone. I picked up the receiver and did not get a dialtone. Thinking the problem was with my handset, I hung up the wireless handset and picked it back up again. I still received no dialtone.
I grabbed my cell phone and called my home phone. The line rang, but the home phone did not ring. Obviously, the problem was with my phone line. Of course, I discovered this a bit late in the night to make a call. I decided to wait until the next morning at the office.
Yesterday, I braved the annoyance of the interactive voice response service that Verizon uses for their repair hotline. After waiting some time for the service to ask me some inane questions and ask if I could perform some tests myself, the service informed me that there was a problem with my line. No kidding?!?!? The earliest my appointment could be scheduled? 19 March 2008 What time will Verizon be out to repair my service? sometime between 8 AM and 5 PM Wow. Why not just tell me my scheduled appointment shall fall on the vernal equinox in the next Leap Year when my first born is named Rumplestiltskin?
So, next Wednesday, I will be working from home all day while waiting for the Verizon repair guy. I was tempted to call Comcast about getting their phone service hooked up, but I did not want to deal with the hassle of having to redo the outcall ability of my alarm system. Honestly, aside from an area-wide outage I had late on Sunday afternoon, my Comcast service has been pretty darn bulletproof. The outcome of this service appointment will dictate where my service money goes for home telecommunications service.

Why even bother with a land line? Personally I’ve been using my cell as my only number since 2002. I have since added a skype phone in the house (along with a headset & USB phone I can use on the road) that I occasionally use with great success.
If Verizon can’t be bothered to provide you with better service and you ‘rarely’ use the landline I say ditch it.

A year ago my land line went dead. I was dependent on it because I work from home. I made an appointment with Verizon to come fix it, for 9 days after I made the request for repairs, for a Wednesday. Verizon did not show, apparently they are not under any obligation to show up for repair calls. They promised to come on Thursday, Verizon did not show again. On Friday I started leaving messages for Verizon supervisors, who, I found, are under no obligation to return calls. I mentioned I was going to start calling the State office that deals with sort of stuff. Then I called the Verizon DSL office, if my land line was out I figured that I should not have to pay for my DSL service and I wanted a credit.
Low and behold, the DSL call was the magic bullet. 45 minutes after that call not one but two different Verizon repair people showed up to assist my needs. Naturally they said they suspected the problem had to be in my house and I would be paying. 10 minutes later they were up on the telephone poles behind my house doing a massive rewire job.
I cannot say enough bad things about Verizon, I’ve had massive problems since then with overbilling, cheating, lying, deceit, and continued service problems. Their DSL service stopped working properly 8 months ago and they never fixed it, but they did increase my fee for the service by over 150% saying I ordered something I never did. Then tried to charge me $50 to cancel something I never ordered. The cell phone thing is a whole nother matter. I’ve cancelled my DSL, my cell and now all I have with them is this pathetic landline which may be going shortly anyway.
Stay away from Verizon, the company has gone down the tubes. You’ll be working from home for a week to get your line fixed.

Good luck with Verizon. My experiences with them are similar to Cham’s, especially the no-shows for appointments. I’d sit there waiting all day, nothing, then call back and be told that the technician reported “no access.” Hmm, if he had knocked on the door, I could have provided access. Not an uncommon experience - see funny photo. Verizon was sluggish to respond even when the phone line, which inside the house had no dial tone, was randomly calling 911!!
I switched to Cavalier for DSL and VOIP. It’s cheaper and while not perfect, they’ve been better. I can call with problems 24/7 and they haven’t been as bad with the appt. “mix-ups.”

Good part of our block was out from Friday to Tuesday. (I think I’m only a few blocks away from your place). Heard from my wife that trucks were doing laps in alleys today - so hopefully they are working on it.
Verizon guy (even if you have Cavalier - Verizon does the service) said to call and ask to be added to the “Master Ticket” for the neighborhood. The more folks that they add - the more resources the will add to fixing the problem.
Gotta love Pigtown - poor guy climbed the pole to check the box and got heckled by half the block. Killed me.

Paul: The only reason is my house alarm. I would need to do some reconfiguring of that–via my alarm company–if I change to Comcast or the like. I also really don’t care for telemarketers calling my cell phone, hence the home phone.
Cham and Danielle: My dealings have never been that bad. I am a bit annoyed that it took this long for me to find out and for a service call to come out. The only time they move quickly is when there is money involved.
A-FoPT: I love Pigtown for heckling the tech. That’s awesome.
I don’t have any problems with telemarketing calls to my cell because I don’t get any.

SERIOUSLY. Get RID of Verizon. They’re the devil. I can’t think of one nice thing to say about them, except for the fact that I’ll never have to deal with them again.

I’ve also heard about the new Cavalier bundle coming out that way. The C2 promotion. I don’t know what you spend for your Verizon account but maybe the phone/internet bundle at $50 can be an option, especially for your home phone issues. I personally used to have to fight with Comcast on a monthly basis. Better options at half the price wins every time.
