Mine does pretty well the two times I have let him roam free on my first floor. I will probably look into getting a second one for upstairs if I see this offer, but I am impressed. I want to run it one more time to see how it does, but I am impressed thus far.

As for hacking, maybe I will keep it simple--like make my Roomba internet-connected. I will do that, though, after my warranty lapses.

I just let my roomba loose in the kitchen for the first time and noticed a nice feature. It got trapped a shoe rack I have from IKEA and instead of just spending its battery up trying to get loose it cycled off and on hoping that it would get loose that way and not use the entire battery. I have no idea if it would have worked in the long run because I noticed it and took steps to fix the problem but still a nice added feature I wasn't expecting.

I have laminate floors, and the roomba cleans about 600 sq feet every day. My situation is slightly different than Paul's. We got 2 scheduler walls with the roomba, and have been using them since day one. The battery life can be extended by running the roomba every day and letting it fully charge before the next run. Also, it's important to clean the wheels every few days because trapped dirt and hair will clog the wheels and wear down the battery. We never vacuum anymore unless people are coming over. The roomba has been completely awesome in that regard. I'm especially happy at how well it does on cat hair, but you don't really need to worry about that.
