Reassurance

This week has been an interesting one at work.  As most of my fellow denizens of cubicle land know, rumor spreads like wildfire in corporate settings.  The big news here was that a large part of the project I am working on was ending, and it was ending rather abruptly.  Of course, once folks get the word that people are leaving at the end of the week, the rumor mill starts.  By the end of the day on Monday, most folks were worried about their jobs.

I was a little worried, so I contacted the firm that I am a consultant with via email late Monday night.  I received a reassuring note from them on Tuesday morning, and I had a visit with my account executive who had told me he would find out what was going on.  At the same time, though, he had mentioned that my continued work on the project was assured based on a meeting he had last Friday.  I was deemed as “essential,”  which was a good thing to hear.

I still had some doubt in the back of my mind, though.  One of my coworkers was worried, but I was able to assuage both of our fears with a good bit of logic.  I had stated that there are some things that are out of your control, so there is not much else you can do but continue to do the good job and continue executing your tasks.  At the end of the day, if you do a good job, there is little reason that you will not be retained in some capacity.  Let the quality of your work speak for itself, and other things will fall into place.
Today, we were pulled into the office of the project director.  He immediately said that there was nothing wrong.  He said he wanted to let us know that as folks were leaving, we would be staying on board and helping to re-architect the project and then move it forward in its next release.  He mentioned that we would be discussing how we wanted to stay on board and where we would be going next–both from an organizational perspective and from an employment perspective.  If we wanted to stay on board as a permanent employee, we would be given the opportunity.

All in all, this was a good end to the week.  I have a meeting tomorrow with my direct manager about what happens with our group next, but I am pretty confident that I am definitely headed in the right direction.
