18-1: Imperfection at the End

Super Bowl XLII turned out to be one of the more exciting football games in a long time. My prediction to my friends turned out to be true: the Giants ruined the Patriots perfect season, winning 17-14. I just had a feeling that the outcome of this game would be similar to that of Super Bowl III.

As I have said to others, there was a sadistic side of me that wanted to see this upset happen. I truly wanted to see the air of superiority and invincibility surrounding the Patriots dispelled. Part of this was my desire to see someone upset the undefeated cart. Another part of this was the infatuation most of the major sports media outlets had with the Patriots, and I actually saw one of the blathering talking heads on ESPN admit this last night. The Patriots play in an incredibly weak conference division, and everyone was taken with the way they dismantled incredibly overmatched opponents. While that takes nothing away from their accomplishment this season, you saw how this team was vulnerable in their games against the Colts, Eagles, Ravens, and Giants.

The bigger reason I wanted to see the Patriots lose was to deflate those transplant Patriot fans–people who went to school in or around Boston who have taken the Patriots and other area sports team as their own. These transplants are part of the obnoxious New England fan I have railed about in the past. I have nothing against lifelong Pats fans–I know too many of them. To the transplants, suck it!

This loss hurt, but I am pretty certain the Patriots will reload in the off-season. (Sorry, R.O.B., but your Pats will be alright.)

    OK, you baited me…

First off, I’m assuming you meant weak division, not weak conference. The AFC is still superior to the NFC, I think. The AFC East is pretty pitiful, though.

It takes many things to win a SuperBowl. Luck is one of them. The two teams were evenly matched, the G-Men had luck on their sides. Eli squeezing out of a sure sack because Green and Seymour didn’t pull him down. Tyree catching the ball on his helmet. Numerous fumbles either pounced on by the Giants or blown dead by a whistle. A few interceptions dropped by the Pats. Belichick (and McDaniels) not adjusting when they lined up Omenyura over Kyle Brady. That’s not even getting into the Cowboy and Packer games. Of course, in many ways, you make your own luck. The Giants played great and deserved their breaks.

Oh well. It sucks, but the Patriots had their share of luck and then some during their title runs. The tuck rule, the Rams refusing to run, the contact downfield they got away with, etc. etc.

I can’t help but think the run is over. For one reason or another, teams that lose the SuperBowl never come back and win one without completely rebuilding. The last to do so might have been the Dolphins in the 70s. In the Pats case, they have a weak back 8 on defense, that could lose Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, and Tedy Bruschi to retirement, Colvin due to cap issues, and Asante Samuel to free agency. It’s realistic to think, even with a #7 pick in the upcoming draft, they might not be as good in the upcoming years.

The creepiest part is that a week ago, I had a series of dreams where the Patriots lost the SuperBowl, 16-13. I thought there’s no way the game could ever be that low scoring.

@Carol: You suck. That is all.

@R.O.B.: I did make a misstatement, and I corrected it. I did mean division and not conference. And, I agree, the AFC is definitely superior to the NFC.

Interesting idea that the run will be over, but you are correct that teams losing the Super Bowl have a bad following season. I think they will certainly draft well, as their draft masterminds are as good as Ozzie Newsome (Apologies for my local bias). It will be interesting to see how they fare next season. Of course, I can’t say that I will mourn the loss of Mr. HGH, Rodney Harrison.

George gets JJT’s double lattes from now on, and JJT gets locked in the basement with the crafting ladies.

    That’s all. Carry on.
