Hacking the CrackBerry

With my new work CrackBerry, I am trying to get it to work the way I work.  I realize some of this may some form of a “pipe dream” for me.

One of the things that has bedeviled me is making the email notification a bit more infrequent.  I tend to disable most mail notifications on my desktop clients.  Since work is an Outlook shop, I turn off every mail notification option in Outlook.  On my desktop, there are no sounds, no changing cursor, no envelope icon, and no message alert that appear when I receive mail.   Since one of the “features” of the CrackBerry is that you get mail instantly, I want to reduce the time of the reminder.  Can I set it such that it reminds me after, say, 5 email messages?  Just a thought.

How easy or hard is it to place ringtones on the device?  Since it is corporate-controlled, I don’t have all of the usual tricks one has with BlackBerry Desktop software.  Nonetheless, there must be a way to put ringtones onto the device.

I have found some good resources, but I am looking to get some knowledge from fellow addicts as well.

Unless they’ve locked it down a whole lot, you should be able to install Blackberry Desktop and install ringtones even if you don’t use the desktop client for sync. If you have a microSD slot you should be able to put them there and use them from the memory card as well.

I don’t think there’s an every 5 email messages alert trick, at least not without other software. You could cheat it a little by making some messages level 1 and only alerting for those. If you could figure out a way to send a special message every 5 messages you get, you could do that.

Tuneusin.com – free and accessible via the Blackberry’s internet app. Have fun. :)

Mike: The BB Desktop application is merely on our desktops to allow for the device to be plugged in and charged. There is no ability to actually manage the device. The beauty of LANDesk Policy Management. :-|

Charissa: Excellent suggestion. It was there that I also discovered the native ability of the device to download MP3s and save them to the ringtone directory. I now have my all-too familiar 24 ringtone.
