Thoughts on World Series 2007

Another World Series is upon us, and this year the Boston Red Sox face the Colorado Rockies.  Already one game into the Fall Classic, and the Red Sox have already won Game 1.  All indications seem to be that the Red Sox are going to continue their roll that began with the sweep of the Indians in the last three games of the AL Championship Series.

I really do not terribly look forward to the outcome of this series if it goes to the Red Sox.  All I need is more of the Red Sox Nation diaspora clamoring about their World Series win.  After 86 years of not winning a World Series, the Sox potentially can have two championships within the same decade.  Hell, I have a hard enough time dealing with someone’s incessant tweetering about it.  Thankfully, I have been working late to avoid seeing that.

It’s bad enough that Sox fans have gotten as bad as they are, both near and afar.  Nothing annoys me more than the recent abomination of obnoxious Red Sox fans.  I will admit I have always found something obnoxious about Sox fans, but their recent run of success has made them even worse.  Jeremy at East Coast Bias had an excellent point about this on Monday, and I could not agree more.  If you really want to set off a Red Sox fan, tell them they are now just like the Evil Empire.  In doing so you just might see their head asplode.

I have no objections to being a lifelong fan.  If you grew up in New England, I certainly will not begrudge you the right to be a fan.  I have two very good friends who are native Bostonians, and they are not nearly as bad as every other nitwit fan I have come across.  Part of my annoyance comes from the nattering boobs who invade our fair city when the Red Sox come to town.  The other part, though, originates with the bandwagon effect this team has had.  The 2004 Series win contributed to this, but that damned Jimmy Fallon movie had an even worse effect on this phenomenon.

So, because they are now the new Evil Empire, I am going to quietly pull for the Rockies in this Series.  Besides, I think what they are doing with their playoff share is pretty darn awesome.  If you have not read the story of what happened to their minor league coach, Mike Coolbaugh, check it out.  It’s a great read.

    I knew I liked you for a reason. :)

    Go Rockies.

First, off, SUCK IT. :-) (couldn’t resist, sorry)

Seriously, though, to the victors go the spoils. That means when you win, you get the bandwagon pseudo-fans. Everybody hates Yankee fans, but the bad taste comes from the bandwagon jumpers. The “real fans” I know are surprisingly palatable people.

Someday, the city of Baltimore will pass a zoning ordinance banning Peter Angelos’ nose, forcing him out of town, and will be able to build a contender. And the same thing will happen there.

I’ve given up complaining about them - the only way for them to go away is for the Red Sox to suck for awhile.
