Into the Lions’ Den

Last weekend, my buddy Rob was in town to celebrate his birthday and enjoy a couple of Red Sox games courtesy of his wife. I hosted him at Stately Thomas Manor, and we had a good weekend.

On Friday, I took Rob to a couple of the other places in Baltimore for food and drink. We experienced what Canton had to offer, but I was reminded why I tend not to hang out there. You know it is not terribly good when an Irish pub turns into some sort of strange dance club after 9 PM. No Irish pub worth its salt would do such a thing.

On Saturday, we got ready for the Red Sox game in the afternoon. We made the typical rounds at Pickle’s and Sliders. That afternoon was just plain crazy, though. I was one of the lone Orioles fans there, as it was a sea of Red Sox jerseys, hats, and t-shirts. I did have my fun with the Sox fans, though, taunting one guy for bringing his glove to the game. I thought you could only do that if you were 10-years-old. During the game, we took a brief break to meet up with a fellow blogger, bosconet. For dinner, we met up with some friends of Rob’s in town for the game at what I think is the best place in Baltimore for crabs, L.P. Steamers.

On Sunday, the last day of our baseball fest, we decided to hit the Wharf Rat. Good beers, and again I was surrounded by Sox fans. The game had a decidedly nice outcome, silencing a good number of the Sox fans there. For dinner after the game, we went to G&M for crabcakes. Hands down, the best crabcake in town. I joked with Rob, saying “Any crabcake that someone gets stabbed for by butting in line is a damn good crabcake.”

The weekend and the start of the week really took its toll on me, though.  I had a good time, but man old age sucks.

You were right Obrycki’s wasn’t a great choice to bring our out of town Red Sox fans for crabs. While 3 of them did enjoy digging into a dozen hard shells, the crab cake Danielle ordered was so full of shell fragments she didn’t even finish it.

Luckily a) one of the Red Sox fans picked up the tab for the entire dinner ad b) I picked up some crab cakes from G&M last night to make up for the bad one last Saturday.

Next time we have out of town guests in the mood for crabs I’m taking you advice and heading for LP Steamers.

I see you went to Claddaghs. That place is not a real Irish bar and the owner is such a complete tool.

Next time you hang in Canton or in the area, go to Gecko’s on Fleet. In fact, stay out of any bar on the Square other than JD’s.

    Obrycki’s blows — even Faidley’s has better crabcakes. Suddenly I’m hungry…

Have you been to Ale Mary? Looks fun, but I’ve never been. Opinions?

Thanks again for hosting - it was a blast.

My throat is still sore, though. Old age does suck.
