Waiting Around

I am currently in Hampden waiting for my car to be serviced. I am giving a new mechanic a whirl, and I dropped the Mighty Accord off for an oil change and brake service. The brake light in my car appears to be coming on first thing in the morning, and I surmise that the problem is low brake fluid in the car, as the brakes do feel kind of soft. I figure it is probably high time for brake service since it has been a little while.

I am currently at Common Ground, drinking a morning cup of coffee and waiting for the inevitable call about my car. I am also leeching off of someone’s open Wi-Fi access point. Hooray for not locking down your access point, neighbor!

UPDATE: I just got a call after noon today, and it looks like I need rear brake shoes, my brake line flushed, an oil change, and a corroded terminal on my battery cleaned up.  My grand total is going to be just over $400.  Hopefully it’s not too much longer, but it looks like I will not be going into the office today.

Which mechanic are you trying? I’d be interested to know how it goes, as I’ve never used a mechanic in my own neighborhood.

danielle: I will post my thoughts on the mechanic once I get my car and the bill. ;-) Personally, if the service is good and the price is right, I may make a return engagement. It sure beats driving out to Ellicott City for my service.

I’ve actually used Brentwood on a couple of occasions and found them to be fair. Twice they were not able to either fix my problem (it is a Land Rover) or couldn’t reproduce my stated problem so they sent me home without a charge. To me that’s a sign of a good mechanic.

Speaking of which I need to call them to check the AC in the Mazda…..I’d hate to endure August without AC in my daily driver car.

I had excellent luck at the Goodyear place on Fort Avenue by the Shopper’s. Like Paul’s experience with Brentwood, if they were unable to find the proble, they sent me home and didn’t charge me.

Actually, Brentwood did alright by me. They kindly rotated my tires, placing my much more worn tires on my back. They did not charge me for that service. I still paid a little more than $400, but I kind of expected that since the last big brake job I had on the accord cost me just under that. The oil change was pretty inexpensive, too.

That said, I may take my car there for tires. Since I know I need 2.

JJT, it’s funny you mention the corroded battery terminals and brake fluid…I just dropped my car off this morning, and got a call a few minutes ago telling me the same thing about the Mighty Civic :-)

NPR Junky: Must be that time of year for various Mighty Hondas! I just wish it wasn’t a $400 job!
