For my travel this week, I am in lovely Eatontown, New Jersey. I discovered that I am not that far from the Jersey shore, but I must admit I am not seeking it out on account of being spoiled by the beaches of Ocean City. Besides, I didn’t bring my swimming trunks. As for my travel this week, here are some notes I have accumulated from my time here in New Jersey.
- Driving in this part of New Jersey is interesting, to say the least. Making a left turn or a U-turn is quite a production, as I cannot do so at almost all of the intersections. Instead, I need to drive up and around and note the sign that tells me where I can make a U-turn or left turn. I then follow some road around to the intersection I just passed so I can make a left-turn. Just to save myself some time, I have taken to occasionally turning into a shopping center just to allow myself easier entry onto the road from which to make a turn. I believe I heard these turnabouts described as “jughandles,” and I think that whatever urban planner thought that these were a good idea needs to be beat mercilessly.
- In what is not a stunning development, I have found that the wireless network at my hotel leaves much to be desired. Just as with the one last week, this network is unusable in the morning. Additionally, its throughput makes two tin cans tied together with string to be a faster network. How hard would it be for these hotels to invest in some better pipes to the Internet along with both wired and wireless connections?
- Last night, I took a trip to Kelly’s Tavern in Neptune, NJ, at the advice of a friend. The trip was not a terribly long one, and the bar was not too bad. It’s not a bad Irish-inspired bar, but I would not place it along the pantheon of great bars I know. It still is a pretty nice place to grab a brew and food.
- Hotel fitness centers just plain suck. I know I have complained about this before, but the one here at the Holiday Inn is pretty bad. The belt on the treadmill slips, which is potentially dangerous, and the bike appears to be half as old as I am. Nonetheless, I will be there this afternoon.
- Aside from that, I am trying to find something interesting to do. I am just far enough from New York, and am in the exurb that is New Jersey. I might just go driving around, and I am going to try to swing by Red Bank and this place, my “pilgrimage” to all things Silent Bob.

The two best things about New Jersey: Not having to pump your own gas, and Hoboken. You heard it here first.
Not only don’t you have to pump your own gas but it is cheaper than all the surrounding states!
Yeah, the gas is nice and cheap up here. Time to fill up!
Hoboken? I will be in NYC this evening.
Best pizza can be found in Hoboken. Trust me on this. Look for the photos of Sinatra, and you’ve found the right place. No Sinatra? Turn and run out the door.
Best pizza is a personal thing but I think you will agree god pizza is MUCH easier to find in the NJ - NY metro area.
