Quasi-Useless at the Office

While work has been progressing fairly well, for the most part, one of the more frustrating things is that I am still awaiting my clearance.  I have done everything I possibly can to move the process along, but all it takes is one slowdown in the machinery of the process to stall it.  It is frustrating on a variety of levels.

Since I do not have my clearance yet, I must be escorted to my office location, and I cannot leave the company of an escort.  Thus, I am not even in what is to be my office.  Additionally, I have yet to have a clearly defined schedule given that I am relying on others to escort me in and out of the office area.  I feel helpless.  I hate imposing on my coworkers in this fashion, and I hate it since I have yet to be able to actually get into a solid routine yet.  Of course, not having a clearance also means I have yet to actually use a computer on-base.  Without a clearance, I cannot do anything with a computer.  Thus, I get home and spend time reading and responding to emails that have been received through the day.   I can’t even help out with some things around the office since they require access to information.

It is frustrating because I am a creature of habit.  Over the years, I have honed my routine into an art form.  (Geez, that sounded terrible!)  That said being dependent upon the clearance process is like being stuck in quicksand.  I hate it even more, though, since I feel like I am imposing on my coworkers.  I really hustled to get my paperwork done, and now I am in clearance limbo.   I know it should end anytime soon now, but I just feel kind of useless at the office.  The only benefit of this is I have spent some time working from home while getting these things done, and that has not been too bad.  Even so, I miss the interaction with my new coworkers as a result.

I feel for you. An interim clearance shouldn’t take too long. A few weeks. A full blown high level one though will usually take over a year.
