Last night, I settled down with some friends to enjoy the 2-hour season finale of 24. I was hoping there would be some resolution and that the season would end on an upbeat note.
Resolution took place on a couple of different fronts. The Chinese and Philip Bauer were defeated, and Jack’s nephew was rescued. A near war with the Russians was averted as a result, and order–such as it is in the 24 universe–was restored. I also liked seeing Bill Buchanan return in the final two episodes to play a pivotal role.
The biggest resolution seemed to be the acceptance of Jack to the end of his relationship with Audrey. I have to agree that the return of Audrey this season was possibly one of the weaker points of the season. Thankfully, the writers gave her an appropriate send-off, having Jack admit that the best way he can take care of her is to let her go. It’s here that you see Jack accept his fate. He is extremely good at what he does, and his services will always be needed to respond to the next crisis. He has tried unsuccessfully to move away from this career, but he has always returned to it. In this sense, Jack is truly a tragic character.
One of the weaker points of the finale was the sudden appearance and disappearance of Milo’s brother. He appeared to claim Milo’s body and personal effects. Once he did that and told Nadia of his brother’s affections, he disappeared. That was just plain strange.
Another weak point, though, was that they did not kill off the Chang. I agree with the Jack Sack that his character just got to be a pain in the ass as the season wore on, and I was hoping that Jack would have his revenge on him for his incarceration and torture in China. Unfortunately, he was only badly burned and defiant to the end. Maybe between this season and next season, he gets tortured mercilessly by Jack.
Overall, this season was weaker than some of the others. I think there are a few reasons for that. There were episodes where Jack played only a minor role. I also think that the continuing soap opera of CTU wore on people as the season continued. Sure, there has been drama in the past between the characters, but it seemed so much bigger this season compared to others.
Well, now I get to wait another eight months before Season 7. Let’s hope it’s an improvement over this season.
