Alarmed, Walled, and Covered

In just over two weeks after my break-in, I have taken almost all of the necessary action to ensure that a break-in does not happen again.

  • Alarmed:  My alarm system is working and being monitored.  The system works just as it should, and I am using it all the time.
  • Walled: The entry point in my basement has now been completely secured.  My friend and I walled it in with some 2×4 and 2×10 lumber.  We secured it with screws and made it such that it cannot be tampered with from the outside.  Even if a potential intruder decides to try their luck, it will take too much time and effort to try and get in.  Even then, the only means of access through the wall are too small to allow anyone in.
  • Covered: The window that exposed my office has been covered with curtains.  No one can see into the office from outside my home, so when my items are replaced they will not be attractive to any potential interlopers since they cannot see them.

The last thing I need to address is a way to make the crawlspace completely inaccessible.  I am going to talk to my dad and uncle and see if I can get a hinged and lockable access door.  I know they should be able to get one given the type of crawlspaces they deal with building homes in Ocean Pines.  Once that is done, I will have everything covered.

It was an expensive lesson to learn, that’s for sure.

Jason, so sorry to see of your break in. I haven’t been blogging too much in the last few weeks, so I just read about it. I feel for you! It has happened to me and there is definetly a feeling of violation you go through.

I own one of those Columbian Yellow and Black Coats and I sure wouldn’t want it stolen. Your grandfather’s pipe is even more special to lose, I hope it turns up on the market place and gets returned to you. I will keep my eyes open for it in the antiques shops I go to. You never know what can be found. Take care my friend!

I’d be interested to find out about what details you get about hinged/locking access grates you hear about. I have a window I would also like to secure, but I’ve always been too lazy to look up a given product…

I still say you should have gone with the 70’s love bead curtain, Jason.

Do you have outdoor floodlights? You need to illuminate dark areas on the outside of your house. The thing to get are incandescent floodlights that come on automatically when it gets dark. This kind of photo-sensitive switch is cheap but effective.

NPR Junky: Beads are so 1970s. Besides, that would not work given that I am not Shaft.

JB: Interesting idea, but the problem is that the break-in occurred during the day. It might not be a bad idea to look into, though. I am also pondering the privacy fence, though, in another year.

Jason, then who could be better to promote the 70’s beads extravaganza, as you ARE a product of the 70’s?

Being a product of the 70s is one thing. Willingly embracing the fashion sense of that decade is entirely another thing.
