The Wire: Season 4 Finale

I decided to avail myself of one of the features of my overpriced Comcast cable service: HBO On Demand. Specifically, I wanted to watch the Season 4 Finale of The Wire.

I am not giving away any spoilers from the episode, but it was a good ending. The most interesting development in the series has been the growing contrast between Namond and Michael has been a good arc. It almost seems as though both kids are changing places from where they started at the beginning of the season. And the change in Michael is remarkable.  Seeing some of the other turns actually makes me a little sad.

Additionally, the end of Episode 49 is especially tough, with Randy calling to Sergeant Carver as he leaves the hospital, “You gonna help, huh? You gonna look out for me?”  Wow.
As eebmore said in an earlier post, I defy the producers to tell me they are not basing their characters on real-life characters. Carcetti is obviously based on O’Malley, and the problems he has upon assuming office–a monumental school deficit–is just too obvious.  David Simon can say all that he wants that characters are an amalgamation of political characters through the years, but I would beg to differ.
I did like the turn by outgoing Governor Robert Ehrlich as a State Trooper in Annapolis. That was funny.

P.S. Hey, eebmore: the Greek’s right-hand man has an appearance in the finale.

The season finale was DA BOMB! When that thing with Bubbles happened, I figured everyone would be getting the ax. And Michael – Michael? When did he become so…hard. That boy is frightening.

For some reason, my biggest feeling towards the show is with Dookie. I feel so bad for that kid. When Prez saw what he was doing, it broke my heart because you see right then and there that some of these kids just can’t get out no matter how hard they try.

I’m okay with Simon’s assertion that Carcetti isn’t “based” on Carcetti. Really. There are just going to be some natural parallels that are unavoidable. It was just, for me, this season at least, the parallels have become hopelessly knotted to the point where Carcetti, if he wasn’t supposed to be O’Malley before, he has certainly become O’Malley now. Again, I’m even okay with that; but Simon, in the director’s commentary for season 3, expressed so much annoyance that people get think that Carcetti IS O’Malley, and I have to admit, I’m a little annoyed at his annoyance, in light of the 4th season. It’s like, DER, I wonder how people would get THAT impression?

Luckily, a couple of days ago I was participating in this comment thread, and Simon was kind enough to join in to clarify on a few points for the participants, and gab a little bit about baseball and baltimore. And I had the opportunity to tweak him a little bit about O’Cetti.

Anyway, whatever. Best show ever made. I love it to death. If The Wire was a girl, I would totally make out with it, even if she had every STD known to man.

Also, when I saw the Greek last month, he caught me leering at his niece or granddaughter or something, and gave me the dirtiest look. If I disappear, have the authorities dredge the Delaware river. Maybe they’ll find my headless, handless body. That would be SOOO COOL!!!

OSP: It was a good finale, and I was saddened to see what happened to Dookie, too. Here is a kid who has everything against him, and he is forced into the trade as a consequence of a friend becoming an enforcer. Prez tried so hard, but that final scene where he sees him on the corner is the worst.

eebmore: You are a dork, but I am impressed by David Simon’s appearance on said thread. See, they occasionally do read these things called blogs.
