- After I resolved my problem with a Treo Smartphone last week, I was presented with another problem: getting email onto the device. Yesterday, I was finally able to VersaMail on the Treo to communicate with Microsoft Exchange via Exchange ActiveSync. The problem I had resulted from not having a rule to allow this traffic at the ISA 2004 Server that acts as our firewall at the office. When I was testing this–using a Treo 650 Simulator on my home PC–I was able to view the logs live to see what was happening. Since I did not have a rule for this traffic, the connection was getting rejected at the firewall. Once I created my rule, I could see traffic coming into the firewall getting sent to my Exchange Server. It now works like a charm, and by using Versamail the user can sync their email and calendar wirelessly. And this all happens via a secure connection–over port 443. In theory, if any employee decides to use any Windows-based smartphones, this should work for them as well.
- A zero-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer has been disclosed. The patch to address this problem will not be forthcoming immediately, but I am taking corrective action to address the problem at the office. Former M$ security guru Jesper Johansson has the instructions to deploy a workaround if you administer an Active Directory domain. I will not get every machine I support in my environment, but I should get all of them over time. Given that all of my users use IE, deploying this workaround is critical.
- After letting the issue rest for a bit, I have dived back into my database project at the office. One of the better things I did, though, was use someone who had a better idea of the actual process that is trying to be captured. The help here was significant, as I was able to identify some things that I was needlessly complicating. Additionally, the database is a document management system–tracking the status of documents that are required as part of audit engagements. I am still having a difficult time trying to make things flow through the database from a data entry standpoint. In other words, when a user is making an entry, I need to ensure that they are either editing an existing entry and adding an item to it. I still need to do a bit more poking, but I hope to have something workable in a couple of weeks.
- Speaking of work, I have been given some instructions on restructuring our shared directories on our file server. My work here is never done.
