First Home Project: Hanging a Mailbox

Now that I am officially a homeowner, I decided to take part of the day on Friday to address some logistical concerns.  In what must have been a record for customer service at the MVA in Glen Burnie, I renewed my license and changed the address on my vehicle registration in just over 30 minutes, with most of that time waiting in line at the Information Desk to make sure I was heading in the right direction.  I figured I could take care of both of these and save myself from a last-minute renewal in November.  I can now also get a residential parking permit for the area outside my house.

After I finished up at the MVA, I headed across Ritchie Highway to Lowe’s.  One of the first things I needed immediately was a mailbox.  So, I purchased myself a nice serviceable one, and I had some help getting some mounting screws for it.  After that, my plan was to take care of this Saturday afternoon.

So, on Saturday afternoon, I headed over to my house with some small items to move inside.  I borrowed a friend’s drill, and he gave me a couple of different screws to use in case the concrete screws I had did not quite work out.  That was a good thing, as I did use those.  After my initial hole was not quite right, I move up slightly in the brick and drilled a new set of holes.  The screws were all set, and after moving the screws out a bit further from the wall than I thought, I hung the mailbox.  Behold the fruits of my labor and be amazed at my handiness!

I am pretty proud of myself.  I managed to hang the mailbox in now time at all, and I managed to hang it straight.  Now I can receive all those bills I so look forward to!  ;-)

I prefer mail slots in the door. The advantage to those is your neighbors and even the postman doesn’t know if you are away.

Paul: I thought about that, but I did not particularly relish the notion of cutting through my door. I did get a locking mailbox, so that should help alleviate the problem–and being real close to the post office helps, too.

Get that parking permit before the next game, otherwise you’ll be ticketed and/or towed!!
