End of the Week Hanger-Ons

  • While grabbing a beer with some friends, I caught the very end of last night’s Orioles loss to the Twins.  In discussing this with my friends who had seen the game at the Yard, we were both amazed that for a team in its 9th straight losing season that there are some phenomenally bad pitchers still on the team.  I just don’t get why Russ Ortiz, Bruce Chen, and–to some extent–Rodrigo Lopez are still on this team.  If your team is bad, why not get rid of the poorly performing elements and give some of the younger kids in the farm system a chance.  At this point, you really have nothing to lose.
  • After starting with MySpace the other night, I actually understand why it is such a hot site.  You get pings when folks add you as your friend, and you get this strange sense of validation.  The other thing that makes it sort of fun is finding out who out there has a page that you know.  Heck, three of my friends from college are apparently on it.  Add to that some other folks I know via this whole blogging enterprise along with my nephew, and it is pretty interesting.  I still need to do some more poking around on it, but I have to admit I like it.
  • I was talking about the home ownership experience that is creeping up on me, and I have to admit that at times I am both excited and nervous.  I find myself a bit in awe of the whole experience and everything that needs to get done.  I am definitely excited by the prospect of owning a home, but sometimes I wonder how it is going to turn out.  The other thing I decided on is when the big move is going to take place–23 September.  After the move, to celebrate my last time in the old ‘hood, my friends and I are going to do a bar crawl.  It will also be a good way to repay those folks who will be helping me with the move.
  • I am taking off from work next Thursday and Friday to head to New York for my first visit to Yankee Stadium.  A couple of friends and I are going to watch the Detroit Tigers play the Yankees in an early afternoon game and take in some of the sights and sounds around “The House that Ruth Built.”  There will be no question as to which team I will be supporting.  After that, I am going to stay overnight with my friend George who I have not seen in some time.  I figured I might as well extend my stay in NYC to catch-up with a friend and make my holiday weekend a bit longer.  I will take the train back into Baltimore, but I am up in the air as to when I leave New York.  It is nice to see that the scheduled travel time is between 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • It’s Friday, and I am bolting the office early today.  It’s just one of those days when I really have no desire to be in the office.

Buying a home for the first time can be both frightening and exhilirating, but it is the best thing by far I’ve ever done. Knowing that I have a HOME, a personal sanctuary that is completely and totally mine, is a sense of accomplishment, comfort and independence like no other. I prefer being home to going out most of the time. You will too.

Should it be obvious what team you are supporting? Do all people in Baltimore hate the Yankees? Don’t toy with me.

epiph: You know me better than that. Remember the old adage “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

Honestly, one of the friends I am going with is an O’s fan, and the other–the trip planner–is a Tiger’s fan. My O’s suck, so I will gladly–and politely–cheer for the Tigers. ;-)
