Critical Windows Update: MS06-040

Yesterday was Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday, but one patch stood out as needing to be applied immediately. Even Susan Bradley–an admittedly paranoid administrator when it comes to deploying Windows patches–applied this patch immediately.

The patch in question is Security Bulletin MS06-040. There exists a vulnerability in the Server Service that could potentially allow for remote code execution. In other words, a service that runs on Windows 2000 and higher is vulnerable to attack.

You should be notified of the availability of this update if you have Windows Update Notifications turned on. If you are responsible for a Windows Server environment, I would suggest applying this patch as soon as possible.
