Sometimes, the time comes where Windows gets so full of cruft after running for a while that you need to reinstall. I used to do that occasionally, but I have gotten reticent to do that lately. My home machine, though, is due for a cleaning. It is getting laggy at times, and I think the buildup of Windows cruft is playing a major role. I was reminded of this yesterday when coming across the following article again: Langa Letter: XP’s No Reformat, Non-Destructive Total-Rebuild Option.
I will give it a whirl this evening and report on the results.

It should work for both. The only problem I can see is if you have no media disks and are running XP Home, as most vendors tend to not ship media these days.
