Rebuild Windows XP: The Non-Scorched Earth Way

Sometimes, the time comes where Windows gets so full of cruft after running for a while that you need to reinstall.  I used to do that occasionally, but I have gotten reticent to do that lately.  My home machine, though, is due for a cleaning.  It is getting laggy at times, and I think the buildup of Windows cruft is playing a major role.  I was reminded of this yesterday when coming across the following article again: Langa Letter: XP’s No Reformat, Non-Destructive Total-Rebuild Option

I will give it a whirl this evening and report on the results.

Is this specifically for Pro or Home? Or does it work for both?

It should work for both. The only problem I can see is if you have no media disks and are running XP Home, as most vendors tend to not ship media these days.

Of course one does not have to worry about this when they use a Mac. :-)

George is right - Macs never get old or slow. They never break. They never overheat. They never need to be hauled into the apple store so the in-house “Geniuses” can fix them. They are little glowing boxes of perfection and joy. They also cure cancer and spit adorable puppies out of the CD slot.

-Sorry George… tongue firmly in cheek here-

  1. [...] Last week, I decided to embark on a non-destructive rebuild of my home desktop.  I had based this on an article by Fred Langa at InformationWeek.  I made one fateful error, though, that complicated the rebuild.  I had decided to update the drivers for my Logitech QuickCam Messenger web camera.  It was the installation of these drivers that doomed this operation.
