- New England experienced a return of winter yesterday, and that reminds me of what I miss about winters in New England. (By the way, the photo accompanying the story shows one of the “T” lines I used to ride when I was in Boston.) Parts of New England got 10 inches of snow. It is supposed to be in the 50s here today–sunny and nice is not something to complain about. Nonetheless, I like winter to be, well, wintry. Is that too much to ask? I have not seen snow since early December.
- How wrong is it for me to wish a pox upon the Anti-Christ that is Jeffrey Maier? I came across an article on his collegiate baseball career and pro prospects while reading the posts over at Camden Chat. It will be 10 years this October since that happened, and it looks like it will be 10 more years until the Orioles are ever playing in a game of that magnitude. Still, is it wrong to hope something as karmic as what he did to my beloved team in October of 1996? Maybe not a career threatening injury, but maybe he experiences a similar call while playing baseball at some professional level–minor or major league.
- Speaking of baseball, I was a bit surprised that the O’s pulled the trigger on a deal for a decent pitcher. Kris Benson is not a staff ace, but he does bring a measure more credibility to the staff and helps to push some of the younger arms to lower spots in the rotation. I also think that he is the kind of pitcher who becomes better when taught by the pitching Zen master that is Leo Mazzone. Additionally, you get the additional bonus of the ruckus caused by his rather comely wife. In other notes, I kind of like the way the O’s are signing some of their decent core players to deals–Gibbons gets a 4 year deal today, and they resigned Bruce Chen and Erik Bedard to one year deals to avoid arbitration. I am still annoyed at the way the team is being run, and it manifests itself in how most of the current players failed to honor the death of the great Elrod Hendricks. Maybe they took something away from the B.J. Ryan fiasco, but this is certainly a nadir for any fan of Baltimore baseball.
- Good episode of 24 last night, and I enjoyed the morning recap on the 24 Podcast on my way to the office this morning. As the host of the podcast said, the hour just seems to go by so fast. I now admit that I am indeed a 24 junkie.
