With apologies to Napoleon Dynamite fans, it appears as though the liger is an actual animal. The Novosibirsk Zoo has announced the arrival of three liger cubs .

So, clearly this liger is of the Panthera species given that the father is a lion and the mother a tigress. Were it reversed, the offspring would be a tigon.
